Recession Proof No More — Videogame Sales Drop
Well it had to happen sooner or later and based on the latest stats from NPD, we’re seeing a fifth month of consoles, games and peripherals declining. How bad is it? Well comparing it to last year’s numbers we’re looking at a 29% drop from $1.19 billion to $848.90 million in sales. The numbers range from there when you break it down into the specific areas of sales (software versus hardware, etc) but clearly all areas of sales are being affected.
Clearly it doesn’t take a genius to deduce why this is happening. The real testament will come as we head into the fall gaming glut now that Madden NFL 10 has officially hit the shelves. With no new consoles on the horzion the next few months full of new games this number may change.
In the next month alone you have banner titles like Bealtes Rock Band, Halo ODST and later in the fall sequels for Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and Splinter Cell. Currently Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort is bucking the trend and raking in mad cash. Speculation is also out there that this decline may spark another price drop from the big three. There has already been buzz about the PS3 unveling a slimmed down version of their console much like Microsoft did with their non-hard drive model last year. Whatever strategies are employed clearly this looks like a situation where he head in the a fall season where people may not want to spend on games as part of their budget. Our much touted recession proof security blanket is starting to quickly degrade.
