To say the game was a hit is an understatement. The genius behind the launch was that when the game first came out it was shareware that the company then gladly asked people to “share.” Not that this did wonders for sales but the game did go viral around the likes of 10 million copies shared after only two years of existence. The first box version was sold in stores in 1995 and from them one we had a few more iterations of the game, a console release of Doom 3 a few years back and of course the requisite craptacular videogame movie staring The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). All this from the little free game that changed the way we could play games together without being in the same room , and set the stage for a revolution in First Person Shooters.

The magazine essentially became less and less relevant but somehow managed to eek by until finally publishing it’s final issue in January of 2009. It was announced later that year that EGM would rise again on the internet and apparently we’ll get a chance to see what this is all about in April. While it won’t be the same as getting your EGM in the mail and flipping immediately to the review section or the the letters to see if your rant got posted, hopefully in embracing the current technology we’ll get to see something new amidst the sea of homogeneity we currently have in our gaming Websites. Carry on EGM
